  • Resource names should be plural. For example, use /users instead of /user.

Hierarchical Resource Structure

Resources can have hierarchical relationships, which can be reflected in the URI structure.

  • /users/{user_id}/orders: Represents orders placed by a specific user.
  • /products/{product_id}/reviews: Represents reviews for a specific product.

Step 2: Choose Appropriate HTTP Methods

Each resource should support standard HTTP methods to perform CRUD (Create, Read, Update, Delete) operations.

Common HTTP Methods

  • GET: Retrieve a resource or a collection of resources.

    • Example: GET /users retrieves a list of users.
    • Example: GET /users/{user_id} retrieves a specific user.
  • POST: Create a new resource.

    • Example: POST /users creates a new user.
  • PUT: Update an existing resource or create it if it doesn't exist.

Step 3: Structure URIs

A URI (Uniform Resource Identifier) should clearly and consistently represent the hierarchy of resources.

Best Practices for URIs

  • Use nouns and hierarchical structure: Reflect the relationship between resources.

    • Example: /users/{user_id}/orders/{order_id}.
  • Use query parameters for filtering, pagination, and sorting:

    • Filtering: GET /products?category=electronics.
    • Pagination: GET /products?page=2&limit=20.
    • Sorting: GET /products?sort=price_asc.
  • Avoid verbs in URIs: Actions should be represented by HTTP methods, not in the URI.

    • Incorrect: /getUserDetails.
    • Correct: GET /users/{user_id}.

Step 4: Handle Data Formats and Responses

Data Formats

  • JSON (JavaScript Object Notation): The most common data format for REST APIs. It is lightweight, easy to read, and widely supported.
  • XML (eXtensible Markup Language): Sometimes used, but less common due to its verbosity.

Response Structure

  • Standardize the response format: Ensure consistency across the API.
  • Include metadata in responses: Such as pagination details or API version.
  • Return the appropriate HTTP status codes:
    • 200 OK: For successful requests.
    • 201 Created: For successful resource creation.
    • 204 No Content: For successful deletions.

Step 5: Implement Pagination, Filtering, and Sorting

Pagination

When returning large sets of data, use pagination to split the data into manageable chunks.

Filtering
