Dependency Inversion Principle

The Dependency Inversion Principle (DIP) is one of the five core SOLID principles. It states that high-level modules should not depend on low-level modules; both should depend on abstractions. In other words, rather than tying your high-level business logic directly to specific low-level implementations, you should introduce abstractions (such as interfaces or abstract classes) to decouple these layers. This results in more flexible, maintainable, and testable systems.

In the automotive industry—where systems often interact with various hardware components (like CAN bus drivers, sensors, or actuators)—applying DIP is crucial. It allows developers to easily swap out low-level details (for example, changing the communication protocol or hardware driver) without altering the high-level logic that relies on these components.

What is DIP?

If you later need to support another protocol (like LIN), you'll have to modify the telemetry system. Instead, applying DIP means that the telemetry system should depend on an abstract communication interface, allowing you to inject any communication protocol that implements that interface.

Bad Practice Example

In this example, the TelemetrySystem class directly creates and uses a CANBus instance. This design is problematic because the telemetry system is tightly coupled to the CAN bus implementation. Any change in the communication protocol will force changes in the high-level telemetry code.
